Volcanic Lake at Catarina

Catarina is a town near Masaya, Nicaragua which overlooks the Apoyo Lagoon.  Catarina is famous for its plant growing nurseries due to the rich soil.

Near the Lake, you will find a small market place where you can buy local artisan crafts and souvenirs and restaurants. During the weekend, it’s a very popular place for families and friend to go  – to the Apoyo Lagoon Viewpoint. The Apoyo Lagoon is actually a lake formed from an ancient volcano.  You’ll get a great view here and be able to buy some souvenirs at reasonable prices.

In the town of Catarina you could buy plants from the nurseries which are famous because of the rich soil of the surrounding area, pottery, lovely rattan and wooden furniture.

To get to Catarina from Masaya, you can take a bus or taxi.  It’s not that far.
